What is Mission Chest Style?
Due to its distinctive qualities and unique design, mission furniture style is quite easy to identify. This style earned its name “mission” due to the fact that it was supposedly based off of furniture that was found in the Franciscan missions in California. It was not until the early 1900’s that the mission style became quite popular.
A unique aspect of mission furniture is that most mission style furniture pieces are specifically made from oak wood. With its simple, straight lines, mission furniture gives off an air of simplicity and quality. Most of the time, mission furniture is built with a square Marlborough leg. Since most of the furniture is chunky, flat, or squared, the overall look of the mission furniture is solid and heavy. In fact, most people consider it to be more of a masculine furniture style.
