What is a Raised Panel Vintage Chest?
Raised panel style construction has a unique history all of its own. Raised panel doors, otherwise known as “frame and panel doors”, were commonly used in early American history. Because they became so popular in the 1700’s, raised panels door are otherwise known as “Colonial Doors”.
These raised panels are constructed with vertical wood stiles and horizontal rails that hold a “floating” recessed panel in the middle. Raised panels were designed to interlock with each other without the use of nails. Also, they were much more resistant to the seasonal weather expansion and contraction than the previous wood battened plank doors. Today, because of its appearance and durability, raised panel construction is still very popular. Many carpenters use raised panels in doors, kitchen cabinets, and chests. Here at Amish Handcrafted, we handcraft our vintage chests with the raised panels to add beauty and to take you back in time.
