History of Steamer Trunks
The steamer trunks were quite instrumental when Americans began to expand westward, and they reached the peak of their popularity in the 1800’s to early 1900’s. The steamer trunks were built with a durable, rugged, and reliable structure. Most people used these trunks to store clothes, treasures, and other valuables whenever they would travel on trains and steamships. These wooden trunk chests were specifically built with a low profile to fit in berths of trains and in the cabins of a steamships, and then they were given the name steamer trunk. Historians claim that most people wanted their trunks to be built with a rounded lid. The porters loading the trains and ships would often place the humpbacked trunks on top of the stack of luggage. This would help keep the trunk from getting damaged at the bottom of the stack. Steamer Trunk Tops
Our steamer trunks come with two varieties of lids – a flat top lid or a dome lid. Although both styles are quite popular, each style trunk chest has its benefits.
Dome Lids
If you order a steamer trunk with a dome shape lid, you will be able to store more of your valuables inside. Also, the cross beams inside the lid help provide extra strength and visual interest.
Flat Lids
A steamer trunk with a flat top lid can be used in several different ways. With a flat surface on top, this trunk chest can be used for storage at the foot of your bed, as a side table in your living room, or even used as media stand. Each of our steamer trunks can be made in solid maple, hickory, or oak. Also, we have a variety of stains you can choose from. Each trunk includes hardware options such as polished nickel, polished brass, antique brass, or dark bronze. The hardware options include the lock, latches, handle caps, and corners. You can design your trunk to match the rest of your home decor and suit your style.
Specialty Finish
The steamer trunk with the “Old World Specialty” finish will give your room an authentic, timeless appeal that blends well with vintage or historic décor. Each of our distressing techniques are randomly applied to your trunk. Rounded and worn corners, knife cuts, simulated worm holes and cracks, chain distressing marks, rasping, and dips all help give the trunk and “old fashioned” appearance.

Frankly, I’m not that easy to please when it comes to custom wood furniture – my father was a master carpenter – but I was very impressed with this piece and give it a 5-star rating.
The trunk is solid and unblemished, the fit and finish are excellent, and the hardware pieces accent the overall appearance nicely. The cedar tray insert is a wonderful feature – it’s surprisingly handsome, adds practical value, moves easily along the rails (no wobbling or sticking) and smells great. The customized brass plaque is located on the inner-side of the lid and is immediately visible when the trunk is opened. The script and engraving are very attractive, and the message gives the trunk a very personal feel.
Equally important, service was excellent. Joshua was extremely helpful – from my first email inquiring about availability of stock, selecting the piece, selecting stain finish and hardware, through confirmation of shipment to make sure it arrived in time for my wife’s birthday. Emails were promptly answered (same day), with complete information, including alternate options and suggestions. Well done.
Based on my experience, I have no doubt the quality of service and workmanship are the same on all the other Amish Hand Crafted products. I recommend the Maple Flat Top Trunk for anyone looking for a beautifully-crafted, personalized keepsake trunk. I ordered this trunk for our grand daughter’s high school graduation, a bit concerned that it could be done on time. I should not have worried! It arrived to its destination a few days early, I knew what was happening all along in production and delivery, and the packaging was terrific. Very tight and secure.
The trunk itself was fabulous! My son-in-law knows wood and craftsmanship and said it is the best piece of furniture in his house now. We have the rich cherry stain on it, got the sliding cedar tray, and also purchased the name plate customized exactly to our words. This is one beautiful piece of furniture.

It was better. I was so excited to see the box on my porch and the words American made. Then I opened it and what can I say? The artistry involved in the construction. It was perfect. I ordered this trunk to finish off my den after basically a total remodelling of the house. Shortly after placing the order I reeived an e-mail stating it was scheduled to be finished and ship on 10/24/18 and it was! Once I got the trunk unboxed it was better than I expected or could have imagined. The coffee finish and antique brass hardware were perfect for room. Close to the flooring finish but just dark enough to have the perfect contrast. The construction is beautiful and it is evident the craftsmen take extraordinary pride in their work. This is a beautiful, quality piece of artistic craftsmanship that I am pleased to have in my home. I also ordered the distressing and it was done in a way that added just the right amount of “character” to the piece but did not make it look as if it had been thrown about carelessly or used as a workbench…just the right amount , not too much, not too little. Again, this is a very nice piece of craftsmanship that exceeded my expectations. Not only are they excellent at crafting theses trunks but the packaging was excellent as well. Heavy Cardboard box with the trunk wrapped in a protective foam-like “paper” and placed in a styrofoam “crate” giving it a nice snug fit in the box and a piece of styrofoam inside the trunk to prevent the sliding cedar box from sliding and damaging the inside during shipping. So happy I stumbled on this website. I can only echo the previous (and helpful) reviews. The dome-lidded vintage-style steamer chest was exactly what I wanted. I was very particular about the color, which can be difficult to determine from a computer screen, but Josh suggested the perfect stain. He was very responsive throughout the process. As others have mentioned, distressing is minimal and not overdone. I wanted a big chest and I got it: the tall-sized chest is big enough that a small adult could curl up inside — perfect for bulky linens, pillows, clothing, or other items. With a piece of glass added to ensure a smooth surface, the flat-topped version of the tall chest would make a good coffee table. Even the heavy lid on a chest this size stays open by itself when fully raised, which is a common failing of cheaper quality chests. Fully finished on all sides and the inside, the chest is attractive from any angle and even with the lid raised. It came in a cardboard box lined with thick styrofoam, which minimizes potential for damage during shipping and actually makes it fairly easy to maneuver the heavy chest into the house without damage after delivery.
If only I needed more than one or two chests!

The quality and craftsmanship of my Vintage Steamer Trunk is simply amazing.
I felt very confident proceeding with this order once reading other reviews on this company and their products and knew I was ordering a great piece of fine furniture.
I must admit though that I was still very surprised of the quality and attention to detail that went into making this piece. I am a Tool and Die Maker so maybe a little more picky than most when it comes to design and quality. I couldn’t find a single thing that I thought would make this chest better and the finish inside of the chest is just as beautiful as the outside-every single inch.
Customer service is outstanding. I made a mistake when selecting one of the options for hardware and Joshua was very quick to respond and get it corrected.
My chest arrived on schedule and was packaged very well.
If you are in the market, do not hesitate, as you will not be disappointed.
